WATER CRISIS: Availability of Water Worldwide and What Are the Solutions?
Everybody talks about the Water Crisis and Water Scarcity but what are the solutions? what as an individual or as an organization can do to make our country Water positive from water negative.?
Here are some great, effective and time-tested solutions, which we all can apply and contribute to our environment and save one of the most precious natural resources “WATER”.
Here are some sector specific solutions for water conservation.
Residentials
- Fixing the leaky faucets
- Using controlled flushing for toilets.
- Using normal shower instead of luxurious wares like bath tubs and shower heads.
- Intermittent use of tap water while shaving or washing utensils.
- No food wastage please – We must not forget that growing 1 gram rice require more than 4 liters of water.
- Not to go for borewells if municipal water is available.
- Monitor your water usage by installing Water meter.
- Don’t overwater your lawn & gardens.
- Prefer going with centralized RO Plant instead of individual domestic RO to avoid huge reject water.
- Avoid any kind of RO plant if you are getting good water quality from source as per WHO.
Institutional i.e., hotel & hospital
- Design your property based on green building norms
- Not allowing the vegetable waste or medical waste going into drain for easy recycling of wastewater.
- Dual plumbing to use recycled waste water for flushing.
- Use of treated waste water for the HVAC applications.
- Run laundry in full capacity instead of 50 or 70% and also install laundry water recycling plant.
- Maintaining swimming pool with quality chemicals & effective filtration process to avoid frequent blow downs.
- Install & maintain advanced energy efficient & water saving equipment e. g. refrigeration, cooling & heating system.
- Water supply, consumption & discharge must be connected with BMS (building management system) for effective monitoring.
Industries
- Installation of adequate treatment plants for effluent and sewage to recycle and reuse waste water.
- Less blowdown from cooling towers by smartly increasing COC.
- Reusing treated wastewater for garden, HVAC, cooling tower and other washing applications.
- ZLDs to recycle maximum waste water.
- Shrink industrial water footprint by recycling water.
- Replace outdated equipment & fixtures with water efficient alternatives.
Municipal
- Better sewage network to avoid seepage, mixing and contamination of potable water.
- Centralized Sewage treatment plants at city level.
- De-Centralized Sewage treatment plants to utilize treated water at source.
- Educate, communicate and create public awareness to make common man “water wise”.
- Legislation & Effective implementation of law to conserve water bodies with proper disposal & recycling of treated wastewater.
Agriculture
- Improve irrigation practices in the agriculture sector, so that there is no water wastage.
- Farmers to practice rain water harvesting.
- Sub-surface or drip irrigation.
- Green house for water conservation.
Apart from sector specific solution there are some common solutions which can be applied commonly to conserve water in all the segments i.e.
Common Solutions (only for heading NOT in voice over)
- Using Water meter to control excess water use
- Educate and create awareness of water conservation technologies
- Reuse the wastewater thorough MBR treatment such as Imemflo
- Rain Water Harvesting
